Math Minus Symbols

Beyond the plain minus sign, Unicode encodes minus-based operators for algebra, set theory and advanced logic. The circled minus (⊖) and circled dash (⊝) put a minus inside a circle, the squared minus (⊟) puts one inside a square, and the dot minus (∸) adds a dot above the sign.

Using math minus symbols

Math Minus Symbols poster — ⊖ (dashsymbol.com)

The Supplemental Mathematical Operators block adds decorated minus signs: minus with comma above (⨩), dot below (⨪), falling dots (⨫), rising dots (⨬), in a triangle (⨺), and union with minus (⩁). The set minus (∖) is the familiar operator for set difference.

These are single characters, so they copy and paste as text, but their meaning is fixed by the notation that uses them. Do not silently replace a standard − or ∖ with a decorative variant in a paper; use the symbol the field defines.

  • Click a tile to copy the symbol; the “Copied!” badge confirms it is on your clipboard.
  • Open a symbol’s page for its Unicode name, HTML entity, CSS and JavaScript escapes, UTF-8 bytes and keyboard routes.
  • Use the dash converter when you need to replace hyphens across a whole text.
  • Use the dash line generator when you want a divider or a repeated line at an exact length.

Math minus questions

What does the circled minus ⊖ mean?

⊖ (U+2296 CIRCLED MINUS) is a mathematical operator drawn as a circle with a horizontal minus. Its exact meaning is defined by the field that uses it; it is not a fixed operation like subtraction.

What is the set minus symbol?

The set minus (∖, U+2216) denotes set difference: A ∖ B contains the elements of A that are not in B. It resembles a backslash but is a distinct Unicode character and a mathematical operator.

Are ⊖ and ⊝ the same symbol?

No. ⊖ is CIRCLED MINUS (U+2296) and ⊝ is CIRCLED DASH (U+229D). They are separate code points with different Unicode names, even though both look like a circle containing a horizontal stroke.

Can I use these symbols in HTML?

Yes. Use a named entity where one exists, such as ⊖, ⊝ or ⊟, otherwise a decimal or hexadecimal numeric reference. In LaTeX, each has its own command, and the LaTeX form is usually preferable inside equations.
