What is a dash symbol?

Dash symbols are the horizontal strokes of written language: the hyphen that joins a compound word, the en dash that spans a range, the em dash that sets off an aside, and the minus sign that subtracts. The family also reaches into other scripts, into mathematics and into the box-drawing characters used to make pictures out of plain text.
Each one is a single character, not an image or a font trick. That is why you can copy a dash here and paste it into an email, a spreadsheet, a slide deck, a social post or a line of code without losing it. The character travels as text; the look depends on the font of the app you paste it into.
Dashes are easy to confuse. - is a hyphen and joins words. – is an en dash and marks a range or a connection. — is an em dash (the long dash symbol) and sets off a phrase. − is a minus sign and belongs in mathematics. They have different Unicode names, widths and jobs — the hyphen vs dash guide walks through the differences, and em dash vs en dash covers the two longest forms.
This site collects 94 dash characters in eight categories. Every entry has a dedicated page with its official Unicode name, code point, HTML entity, CSS and JavaScript escapes, UTF-8 bytes and keyboard routes for Windows, Mac, Linux and phones. Names and code points come from the Unicode Character Database, and the per-symbol pages explain where the character is actually used.

Dash symbol questions, answered
Everything visitors ask before they copy their first dash.
What is a dash symbol?
A dash symbol is a horizontal line used in writing, mathematics or design. The family includes the hyphen (-), the en dash (–), the em dash (—), the minus sign (−), script-specific marks such as the Hebrew maqaf (־), wavy dashes (〜) and the box-drawing lines used in plain-text diagrams (─, ═).
What is the difference between a hyphen and a dash?
A hyphen joins parts of a word or phrase, as in well-known or a five-year plan. A dash separates phrases, ranges or clauses and is longer: the en dash – is used for ranges and connections, and the em dash — for asides and interruptions. They are different Unicode characters with different jobs.
What is the dash symbol used for?
A dash symbol separates parts of a sentence, marks a range or stands in for a mathematical minus. The em dash (—) sets off an aside or an interruption, the en dash (–) marks ranges and connections, the hyphen (-) joins compound words, and the minus sign (−) is used in arithmetic.
When should I use an em dash instead of an en dash?
Use an em dash (—) to set off an aside, mark an interruption or introduce an explanation. Use an en dash (–) for number ranges, scores and connections between equal terms, such as 2019–2024 or the London–Paris route. The em dash is the longer of the two.
What is a long dash symbol?
The long dash symbol is the em dash (—, U+2014). It is the longest dash used in ordinary English punctuation and is also called the long dash or m dash. The en dash (–) is shorter, and the two-em (⸺) and three-em (⸻) dashes are specialist print forms for longer omissions.
How do I copy a dash symbol?
Click any dash on this page and it is copied to your clipboard immediately — no selecting or right-clicking. Then paste it with Ctrl+V on Windows, Cmd+V on a Mac, or a long-press → Paste on a phone.
How do I type an em dash on Windows?
Hold Alt and type 0151 on the numeric keypad. In Microsoft Word, type 2014 and press Alt+X. If you do not have a numeric keypad, copy the em dash from this page or use the Character Map.
How do I type a dash on a Mac?
On a US keyboard layout, Option+Minus produces an en dash (–) and Option+Shift+Minus produces an em dash (—). For any other dash, press Control+Command+Space to open the Character Viewer, search for the Unicode name and double-click the character.
Can I type dashes on an iPhone or Android phone?
Many phone keyboards offer en and em dashes when you press and hold the hyphen key. On iOS, Smart Punctuation can also convert two hyphens into an em dash as you type. If your keyboard does not offer them, copy the dash from this page and paste it into your text.
Is the minus sign a dash?
No. The minus sign (−, U+2212) is a mathematical operator for subtraction and negative numbers. The hyphen (-) joins words, and the en and em dashes are punctuation. They look similar but have different code points, widths and positions.
Why do dashes look different in different fonts?
Every operating system and font draws the same Unicode character with its own proportions. An em dash may be one em wide in one font and slightly narrower in another, and a hyphen may sit at a different height. The character and its meaning do not change.
Can I use dash symbols in HTML, CSS or JavaScript?
Yes. Paste the character directly into HTML, use a named entity such as —, – or −, or a numeric reference such as —. In CSS, use the hexadecimal escape (\2014 for —); in JavaScript, use the \u escape (\u2014).
What are box-drawing dashes used for?
Box-drawing characters such as ─, ━ and ═ draw lines, boxes and dividers in plain text. They connect seamlessly in a monospaced font, which makes them useful for terminal output, README diagrams and text-only tables. They can drift out of alignment in proportional fonts.
Are dash symbols free to use?
Yes. Unicode characters are part of an open standard and are not licensed per character, so you can use them in documents, designs, usernames, captions and code. This site is free and needs no account.
