En Dash Symbol
The en dash (–, U+2013) is the short typographic dash, traditionally half the width of an em dash. Its core jobs are number ranges (2019–2024, pages 10–24), scores (3–1) and connections between equal elements (the London–Paris route). US style also uses it for “to” and “through”. It is longer than a hyphen and shorter than an em dash.

Using en dash symbols

The figure dash (‒, U+2012) is designed to be the width of a digit, so strings of figures such as phone numbers stay aligned in a column. The vertical en dash (︲, U+FE32) is a presentation form for vertical CJK typesetting. Neither is a replacement for the hyphen inside a compound word.
Typing the en dash is easy once you know one route: Alt+0150 on a Windows numeric keypad, Option+Minus on a US Mac keyboard, 2013 followed by Alt+X in Microsoft Word, or – in HTML. On phones, long-press the hyphen key on keyboards that offer en and em dash choices.

En dash questions
What is an en dash used for?
The en dash marks ranges (2019–2024), scores (3–1) and connections between equal terms (the London–Paris train). In US style it can also stand for “to” or “through”. It is not used to join the parts of a compound word; a hyphen does that.
How do I type an en dash?
Windows: hold Alt and type 0150 on the numeric keypad. Mac (US layout): Option+Minus. Microsoft Word: type 2013 and press Alt+X. HTML: use –. On a phone, long-press the hyphen key if your keyboard offers it.
Is an en dash the same as a hyphen?
No. The hyphen (-, U+002D) joins parts of a word and is shorter. The en dash (–, U+2013) separates ranges and connections. They have different code points, widths and uses, even though they can look similar at small sizes.
What is the figure dash?
The figure dash (‒, U+2012) is a dash the width of a digit. It is used in numbers such as phone numbers and account codes where the digits must stay aligned. It is not a general-purpose en dash and is rarely used in prose.
